Glovertown Marina Celebrates Grand Opening

Residents and visitors gathered on Friday, July 26, 2013 to celebrate the Grand opening of the Glovertown Marina.

The Glovertown Yacht Club organized a day’s worth of activities to inaugurate the top-notch facility located right in the heart of Glovertown.

A boat parade departed the facility at 10:30 AM to tour Alexander Bay, and the group of 20 vessels returned to the Marina at 1:00 PM for some entertainment and a barbecue organized by the Bonavista Bay Search and Rescue unit. Master of Ceremonies Kevin Blackmore welcomed the crowd to the event, shortly before he was joined by Glovertown’s own Datin’ Clayton.

Clayton approached the docks in his rowboat bedecked with the Jolly Roger, and with some help from Kevin, proceeded to put the estimated crowd of three hundred in fits of laughter.

Formal proceedings began at 2:00 PM, with a welcome from Clar Howse, Chair of the Glovertown Yacht Club. Greetings were shared by Terra Nova MHA Sandy Collins, Minister of Municipal Affairs Kevin O’Brien, Bonavista—Gander—Grand Falls—Windsor MP Scott Simms, Mayor David Saunder Sr., Yacht Club members Glen Sweetapple and Paul Oram, and Terra Nova National Park Superintendent Bill Brake.

Following the greetings, Mr. Collins and Mr. Simms took the stage to cut the ribbon and officially open the Glovertown Marina. Committee members Clar Howse and David Saunders Sr. unveiled a new sign for the entrance to the facility. The Glovertown Yacht Club committee raised their flag at the entrance to conclude the opening ceremonies.

The proceedings continued with a live performance from local entertainers Quickdraw, and four hospitality boats opened up at 4:00 PM for attendees to view and join in the celebration.

The event marked a major milestone for the both the community and the steering committee. Glovertown Yacht Club thanks the following groups for their contributions and support of the Glovertown Marina project:
